One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp – Book Review

A Dare to live fully right where you are, “One Thousand Gifts” by Ann Voskamp is one of the most profound and uniquely written books I have ever read.  Ann uses a unique style of scriptural truths while using allegory and a poetic style of describing what she has seen with her spiritual eyes.  It is truly the work of a woman who has encountered God in the midst of everyday life.

The good news is that Ann is no different than you and I and she invites us to join her on the journey of gratitude and thankfulness to see God in a new and deeper way.  She doesn’t claim to have all the answers, only that she has come to more fully understand the love and trustworthiness of God, the one who loves her fully and completely.

Here are some of my favorite quotes from this book:

“Thanksgiving is the manifestation of our Yes! to His grace.”

“Naming is to know a thing’s function in the cosmos – to name is to solve mystery.  In naming that which is right before me, that which I’d otherwise miss, the invisible becomes visible.”

“The truly saved have eyes of faith and lips of thanks.  Faith is in the gaze of a soul.”

“Daniel is only a man of prayer because he is a man of thanks, and the only way to be a woman of prayer is to be a woman of thanks.”

“They say time is money but that’s not true.  Time is life.  And if I want the fullest life, I need to find fullest time.”

“I cannot think of a single advantage I’ve ever gained from being in a hurry.  But a thousand broken and missed things, tens of thousands, lie in the wake of all the rushing…”

“Hurry always empties a soul.”

“Gratitude lays out the planks of trust.  I can walk the planks – from known to unknown – and know: He holds.”

“Is it only when our lives are emptied that we’re surprised by how truly full our lives were?”

“The demanding of my own will is the singular force that smothers out joy – nothing else.”

“Joy is God and God is joy and joy doesn’t negate all other emotions – joy transcends all other emotions.”

“Grace is alive, living waters.  If I dam up the grace, hold the blessings tight, joy within dies… waters that have no life.”

“I could become the blessing, live the liturgy!”

“In an endless cycle of grace, He gives us gifts to serve the world.”

“Communion with God, what was broken in the Garden, this is wholly restored when I want the God-communion more than I want the world-consumption.”

Giving thanks enlarges the heart and removes smallness and pettiness.  To name the gifts is to slow down, pay attention and know our Creator in a new and deeper way.  I intend to start keeping my own celebration journal of thankfulness for the small and ordinary things in my life.  I encourage you to join Ann on her journey of “eucharisteo” in giving thanks and experiencing a new intimacy and grace with our Heavenly Father.

By way of disclosure: I received a free review copy of “One Thousand Gifts” by Ann Voskamp in exchange for writing a review—good, bad, or otherwise.
